GFN’s Unwavering Commitment to Hunger Relief

GFN is closely monitoring the recent changes in U.S. foreign assistance and related policies and the impact those changes may have on GFN, our partners and — most importantly — people facing food insecurity around the world.

At this time of uncertainty, GFN is unwavering in our commitment to nourish the world’s hungry. Through our network of food banks spanning over 50 countries, we provided critical food relief to more than 41 million people last year. Our partner food banks are embedded in their communities, with local leadership, and consistently respond to changing conditions on the ground.

GFN does not receive funding from the U.S. government. As such, at this time, we do not foresee a direct impact on our planned work. Our work is supported by private donations from businesses, philanthropic foundations and concerned individuals. The vast majority of food banking organizations in our network are also funded by the private sector and other philanthropic entities.

At the same time, we are deeply concerned about the people who will undoubtedly be affected by the recent changes in U.S. government funding and programs. As the largest donor of aid worldwide, the U.S. government has long been a leader in global humanitarian support. The rapidly announced changes, including shifts in foreign aid, staffing, tariffs and related policies, will have a detrimental effect on many communities, including their ability to access critical food.

We do anticipate that many food banks will see a surge in demand for food and support over the coming days. Our network of food banks collaborates with over 70,000 local agencies (mostly NGOs) to carry out their work, and many of these organizations are already being affected.

As always, GFN will continue to do all we can to ensure that people have access to the food they need to thrive. Food banks are resilient, dynamic organizations that have demonstrated repeatedly that they can rise to challenges, especially during times of crisis. In recent years, food banks worked steadily through the COVID-19 pandemic, food pricing surges, supply chain disruptions and natural disasters. We know that they will continue to do so.

We rely on the generosity of our donors to achieve our goals. Their support is critical to ensure that GFN can meet this moment, providing food and hope to those who need it most.
