But not everyone has equal access to food. Right now, one in 11 people face hunger while one-third of all food is wasted globally every year. And all of that lost and wasted food contributes up to 10 percent of all greenhouse gas emission – further driving the climate crisis.

Food banks connect the dots between hunger and climate.

They recover nutritious food that would otherwise be lost or wasted, and get it to the people who need it most. Less food wasted means fewer greenhouse gas emissions, and fewer people going hungry.

Over the last six years, GFN members provided food to five times the number of people, from serving nearly 8 million people to 40 million people in 2023.

By recovering and distributing 654 million kilograms of food in 2023, food banks prevented emissions equal to taking 400,000 passenger vehicles off the road for one year.

Food banks provide food to schools, shelters, soup kitchens, and more. When organizations receive support from a food bank, they can focus time and resources on specialized services.
