Chicago, Illinois, USA (August 3, 2017) – The Global FoodBanking Network (GFN) announced today that it has reached its fundraising goal of US$1 million for the ‘8 Million by 2018’ Challenge’; a worldwide challenge with a goal of providing nutritious meals to eight million people facing hunger and malnutrition by the end of 2018.
To help the organization meet this goal, GFN successfully raised $500,000, which will be generously matched by an anonymous donor to reach the $1 million milestone.
“Thanks to the incredible generosity of anti-hunger advocates and organizations, corporations, many individuals, and an anonymous donor, we now have the opportunity to serve even more people and fight the winnable battle against hunger,” said Lisa Moon, GFN President and Chief Executive Officer. “No one should have to go hungry and the ‘8 Million by 2018’ Challenge will play a vital role in ensuring that people around the world don’t have to worry about where their next meal will come from.”
As GFN moves to the implementation phase, plans are being developed to advance GFN’s technical and educational support to food bank members while building food banks’ capacity to rescue more food and serve more people.
The ‘8 Million by 2018’ Challenge reached its $1 million goal thanks to strong support from corporations dedicated to alleviating hunger. These include BNY Mellon, General Mills Foundation, Grant Thornton, Griffith Foods Foundation, H-E-B, Ingredion, MyUS, PepsiCo Foundation, Radisson, and RTM Engineering Consultants. Additionally, food banks in more than 20 GFN-served countries enthusiastically supported the Challenge.
“Our partners played a vital role in helping to meet the goal of the ‘8 Million by 2018’ Challenge and we can’t thank them enough for helping to make this program a reality,” Ms. Moon said.
GFN is comprised of a network of food banks located in more than 30 countries that today feeds 6.8 million people in need. The goal of the ‘8 Million by 2018’ Challenge is to reach 1.2 million more people by the end of 2018.
